Eternal Gender and the Plan of Salvation II

eri haywardNPR put out a new video short called TransMormon about a girl named Eri Hayward. I met Eri back when I was a BYU student in 2008. I didn’t know her well, so it was nice to hear about her journey through this documentary.

I think Eri’s story unveils some of the issues I mentioned in my last post about transgender issues in Mormonism, but more sincerely and more beautifully than the other news report. In the plan of salvation, there is an interesting pull between the spirit and the body. It is the union of the two that makes up the soul, or the ideal, divine state. But what happens when the spirit and the body don’t match? Which one is more important? If we can make the body more perfect to match the spirit, shouldn’t we?

As Eri put it, “I don’t think I succumbed to my body, I think I succumbed to my spirit.”

  1. Thank you for sharing this story of Eri. I don’t know any Trans people and if I am honest, I don’t understand it. But this short documentary on her life has given me a little more understanding.

I remember having a conversation with my father about this topic. It seemed like we acknowledged that maybe it is the difference between the spirit and the body, or in other terms the difference between the gender and the sex. What I am trying to say, is thank you for giving me more information and more knowledge on this topic.
